Arriving on Hulu later this month as a part of the streaming service's Huluween programming, Justin Simien's (Dear White People) '80s-set horror satire Bad Hair is sure to be a real treat this spooky season, and the official trailer has today been released.
Bad Hair brings hair-centric horror and laughs to Hulu on October 23rd.
Here's the synopsis via Hulu, "In this horror satire set in 1989, Bad Hair follows an ambitious young woman (Elle Lorraine) who gets a weave in order to succeed in the image-obsessed world of music television. However, her flourishing career comes at a great cost when she realizes that her new hair may have a mind of its own."
Justin Simien on the inspiration for making the film: "In Bad Hair I wanted to use the language of psychological thrillers and classics in the horror genre to interrogate how systems of white supremacy are often disguised as opportunities for Black people. I also wanted to showcase Black women in a genre that typically excludes them as well as celebrate the last black renaissance of the late '80s and '90s."
The film stars Elle Lorraine, Vanessa Williams, Lena Waithe, Laverne Cox, Jay Pharoah, Kelly Rowland, Blair Underwood, James Van Der Beek, and Usher Raymond.
Bad Hair is written and directed by Simien, who also serves as a producer alongside Julia Lebedev, Angel Lopez, and Eddie Vaisman. Executive Producers include Leonid Lebedev, Oren Moverman, and Alex G. Scott.
The film is produced by Sight Unseen in association with Culture Machine.
