Few names are as synonymous with the essence of our genre like Troma or its co-founder Lloyd Kaufman. The New York native is responsible for such B-movie classics as The Toxic Avenger, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, and most recently, Shakespeare’s Shitstorm, and Troma’s own streaming service has had some significant acquisitions as of late.
Recently, Kaufman himself revealed a glut of new distribution acquisitions of more classic horror films, by way of picking up the rights to Shapiro-Glickenhaus Home Video. Included in this deal are, among many others, the second and third Basket Case films, Maniac Cop, Frankenhooker, and many more. He goes on to boast that this acquisition of Shapiro Glickenhaus Home Video allows for films that feature early roles of such icons as Pat Morita, Dolph Lundgren, Bruce Campbell, Maria Conchita Alonso, and more.
Shapiro-Glickenhaus formed in 1984, at the turning point of the home video industry. The company, known then as Shapiro Glickenhaus Entertainment (SGE), produced 14 films of its own and distributed some 100 more. More recently, Synapse Films have released Blu-Ray remasters of films such as Basket Case 2 and Red Scorpion.
