USA Has Cancelled "The Purge" After Two Seasons

The Purge Series Cancelled

After bringing Universal's popular The Purge movie franchise to the small screen, USA Network has decided to pull the plug on the series after just two seasons.

Deadline reports that the high-profile drama was expensive while not drawing enough eyeballs on linear television. According to the site, "The Purge was a breakout in Season 1, but its linear viewership was down 50% in Season 2."

Reason for the cancellation is also said to be due to the network's transition from "ongoing scripted series toward more live and unscripted programming, along with 'eventized' scripted projects."

Much like the films, "The Purge" series revolved around a 12-hour period when all crime, including murder, is legal. Set in an altered America ruled by a totalitarian political party.

The series was executive produced by the film franchise creator James DeMonaco and Thomas Kelly, alongside Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, Andrew Form and Sebastien K. Lemercier.
