Watertower Music Releases The New Version of The Iconic 'Mortal Kombat' Theme "Techno Syndrome"

This one might divide the fans, and not in a FATALITY! sort of way, either.

We are less than two weeks away from the release of the new Mortal Kombat film, which comes over a quarter of a century after New Line Cinema’s initial offering in 1995. While there’s plenty of debate to be had over the quality of it, one thing that cannot be debated is the degree to which the original film’s theme song “Techno Syndrome” absolutely slaps. The 1994 original from The Immortals, consisting of Praga Khan and Oliver Adams of Lords of Acid fame, is one of the most enduring electronic songs in existence.

Can it be topped? Or should the goal be more of a nod to The Immortals’, well, immortal track? British producer and composer Benjamin Wallfisch, whose award-nominated scores include Blade Runner 2049 (BAFTA Film Award), Hidden Figures (Golden Globe), and The Invisible Man (ASCAP Composers’ Choice Award), has provided us with his own version of “Techno Syndrome,” changing up the key and adding more modern EDM and dubstep twists to the iconic theme.

It’s not so much a rework or even a remix, it’s a restoration, a love letter to The Immortals’ work while making it work for a modern audience. The only real complaint is that Wallfisch’s version takes a full minute to get to that iconic yell of “MORTAL KOMBAT!” but even that feels like a nitpick. It’s just as fun and blood-pumping as the original, and while it’s inevitably going to be put up against the ‘94 classic, I don’t think that’s the point.

Mortal Kombat hits theaters and HBO Max on April 23rd. Check out Benjamin Wallfisch’s version of “Techno Syndrome” below:
